The correct answer is your first inclination:  &quot;The only way I could tell who is whom is. . .&quot;  Remember the little trick is that if you can replace the objective form, whom, with the objective form, him, it is correct.  &quot;The only way I could tell he is him . . .&quot; makes sense; thus, this is correct!</description>
